How to begin

If someone comments on your shirt, you can respond: “The manger tells a story. It answers the question of who Jesus came for. He chose to be born in the lowest place so that no one would ever feel too unworthy or too far gone to come to Him.”

Explaining the idea

Then you can add: “Jesus could have entered the world in a palace surrounded by wealth and honour. Instead, He chose a feeding trough in a small town. God wanted to make it clear that He draws near to ordinary people and even to the overlooked and the broken. The manger shows us that God steps into our world at the lowest point, not the highest.”

Connecting it to the gospel

This opens the door to share the bigger story: “The humility of the manger points to the humility of the cross. Jesus came down into our world because we could not climb our way up to God. He came to heal our separation from Him and to restore us from the inside out.”

Sharing the gospel naturally

You might say: “We all know what it is like to feel guilt or shame. We all know the weight of regret. Jesus came for that very reason. He lived a perfect life, then offered Himself for us, taking our sins to the cross so that they would no longer separate us from God. He rose again so that anyone who comes to Him can receive forgiveness, new life, and a fresh start. The manger teaches us that God meets us where we are, not where we wish we were.”

A gentle closing question

You can end the conversation with: “Do you ever feel like you need to fix yourself before coming to God? The beautiful thing about Jesus is that He comes to us first.”
